Dr. Mark Melendez said he was inspired to become a doctor after watching his father go through a health crisis in his late 30s.

“I remember seeing him in a wheelchair,” said Melendez, who was in his teens at the time.

Melendez, 45, now is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and recently opened a practice in the Scinto Towers in Shelton. “I see this as a community where there’s a lot of opportunity to provide services,” he said.

He also has offices in Greenwich and Woodbridge, and has staff privileges at six Connecticut hospitals.

Melendez volunteers his services to patients in need at a New Haven clinic and overseas.

He has traveled to Ecuador and Vietnam on medical missions, and will return to Vietnam for third time in March. When on these trips, he may help patients with burns, scars and other injuries.

“It’s been a phenomenal experience to provide services in other countries with dire needs,” said Melendez, who speaks Spanish.

Grew up in New York City

He grew up in the Bronx, the son of a chemical engineer and a school principal. He gravitated toward the sciences as a young student, later working as a lab technician and a physician’s assistant before completing medical school. He did his fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Melendez performs a full spectrum of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, hand, breast and body, along with facial rejuvenation.

He specializes in breast reconstructive surgery, assisting many breast cancer patients, and also frequently does work related to skin cancer and head injuries.

He said Connecticut has the highest breast cancer rate in the United States, and he’s been active with the nonprofit Susan Korman for the Cure Connecticut.

Melendez said his goal is to offer personalized, patient-focused care.
His wife Renee is an emergency room doctor at Greenwich Hospital. They have one child.

Dr. Mark Melendez’s Shelton office is located at Four Corporate Drive, Suite 484.
