In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wilton resident Dr. Mark Melendez, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has pledged to donate a percentage of the profits from the breast cancer reconstruction surgeries he performs during the months of October, November and December to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation of Connecticut.

Melendez, who sits on the Susan G. Komen Connecticut Board of Directors, has earmarked his donation to provide mammograms for women in the state, noting that Connecticut has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States, and that approximately 3,000 are diagnosed each year.

Melendez has offices in Greenwich and Shelton, and recently took over Fairfield Plastic Surgery in Fairfield. He specializes in cosmetic and surgical procedures for the face, hand, breast and body, including facial rejuvenation, as well as microvascular breast reconstruction surgery, including the DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforators) flap procedure for breast cancer patients.

Melendez lives in Wilton with his wife, Dr. Renee Baranin-Melendez — an emergency room physician at Greenwich Hospital — and their two sons, Mark and Matthew.
